Na začetku je bila samo voda; mrtva voda, jalovo morjé. Ko pa je prekel čas in čas in čas, se je napletlo tako, da je morje postalo mati. Rodilo je otroka! Je že res, bil je majhen in nebogljen ta otročaj, ampak vendarle, bil je živ! Zatorej mu je mama Morje namenila prelepo ime: Življenje.
Potlej pa je mama Morje pestovala in pestovala tega svojega otročaja, pestovala ga je in ujčkala v mehki zibki svoje srčne krvi.
Otroče Življenje pa je raslo in raslo. Ko pa je doraslo, se je postavilo na svoje noge. Saj otroci vsi takisto storijo. Postavilo se je Življenje na svoje noge in na kopno namerilo korak. Kdo ve, zakaj ga je neznana sla gnala z mehkih steza morskih tokov na te trde, kamnate poti. Kdo ve, zakaj! Ko pa je prišel čas ločitve in je Življenje od svojega mokrega doma jemalo slovo, mu je mama Morje dala za popotno brašno kapljico slane vode, kanček svoje srčne krvi. Odtlej imamo solzo v očeh. Naj vas ne bo sram solze, kadar jo stiska zahteva zase! Solza je naše popotno brašno; zdavnaj, zdavnaj nekoč nam jo je dala na pot naša prva mati, mama Morje.
Mother Sea
In the beginning, there was only water.
Dead water, barren sea.
When a lot of time had passed,
a lot of time…
It so happened
that the sea became a mother.
She gave a birth to a child.
True story.
He was tiny and helpless,
the baby, but he was alive.
That is why Mother Sea named him
most preciously – Life.
Mother Sea afterwards
nursed her child all the time.
She nursed him
in the soft cradle of her heart blood.
The child Life grew and grew,
until he began to stand on his own feet.
As children do.
And as soon as it could walk,
it headed for the land.
Who knows why
an unknown force led it
from the softness of water streams
to hard stony paths?
Who knows why?
When the time came to depart,
Life did farewell to his wet home.
As a farewell present
Mother Sea bestowed on it
a drop of saltwater –
a drop of her heart blood.
That is way our eyes
fill with tears.
Do not hide your tears
when hard times take their toll.
Tears are our farewell present.
A long time ago,
once upon a time, we got them
as a farewell gift
from our first mother –
Mother Sea.
